The Malta Project By Google X
The Silicon Valley leaders have been investing many resources on the development of the Moonshot Projects. These multinationals like Facebook, Amazon, Tesla, would like to disrupt the inequalities in the word! Developing projects to improve the global access to the Internet or technologies in the emerging countries will increase the productivity of the markets and its actors'one like the electronic components suppliers.
1. Introduced the Google X issue
Google has changed the daily life by offering all the online service to the entire humanity. The company’s vision has always been evolving, according to the current society’s needs. Numerous companies earned market shares on the new digital markets, through specific SEO campaigns.
During the 2016 reorganization, the company underlined the semi-secret Google X lab, where many revolutionary inventions will disrupt the actual world! The Management board of the Alphabet group adopted a new philosophy: the problems will be solved through the intensive use of breakthrough technologies to get radical solutions.
How does it work? The Google X Lab carefully monitors the market to control the different innovation and to propose the start-up an interesting deal, that will allow the concerned entity to grow up in the market. The start-up will benefit from the corporate tools of Google (PR, HR, Legal advice) by paying a licence to the Silicon Valley leader.
What do they aim at? The Alphabet entity wants to make the most of the current search engine’s capacities through the Moonshot Projects. With the help of skilled and motivated people well managed, the company will manage to overcome the lack of funds from the government. The projects might be risky regarding the financial results in the short-term, but the huge economic impacts will disrupt the current global structure.
However, the Moonshot Projects must be linked to the core business of the entity and manage to gather all the actors of the market that will be impacted by the innovation. For instance, the passive electronic components distributors and obsolete electronic parts finder’s business will be impacted and might be more sustainable. The emerging and successful Moonshot Projects will make the business more respectful and future-oriented.
Google X has decided to focus on a real burning issue: how to produce sustainable energy for covering needs of an increasing human growth?
2. What about the Malta project?
The new project, named MALTA, led by Alphabet, previously Google X Lab, aims at stocking clean energy thanks to salt and antifreeze. The Malta Team, via the local energy project, claims to be more efficient and less expensive than the actual Tesla storage system with lithium batteries. They pollute and ruin both agriculture and drinkable water sources. Thus, the lithium stocks could disappear in a few decades, so it is increasingly urgent finding sustainable alternatives.
Indeed, renewable energies are often wasted and lost due to storage problems and to discrepancies between production and real needs. As an example, California lost 300 000 megawatts of renewable electricity for lack of storage, 17% of the Chinese renewable energy were lost as well. 4% of the German stocks disappeared too*.
The new process proposed by Alphabet would use salt and antifreeze since there are less rare and expensive than lithium. The Malta entity converts energy into heat. Heat will be turned into electricity thanks to a power station containing 4 reservoirs: 2 with salt and 2 with antifreeze linked by pipes and a heat pump.
Then, the solar or wind energies will be inserted in the circuit to be changed into 2 distinct flows: a hot one, which will heat up the salt and a cold one which will cool down the antifreeze. This system could stock energy during a few hours or days. This system implies the use of very expensive metals and ceramics materials but the MALTA’s researchers have created a system able to operate at a lower temperature, so it could reduce costs and increase electronic inventory.
The process has not been tested in real conditions yet, it is just a prototype for the moment. However, if there are positive results, it could be sized for huge industrial sites, data centers or little wind-turbine or photo-voltaic farms. Therefore, Google must seriously consider competitors, like Siemens that are really interested in the Moonshoot Projects, to be well-established on the market.
